LTH AEROSOLS Seminar: Investigation of brake wear particle emissions from heavy-duty vehicles

Bassent Dridi, PhD student at Department of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering Sciences, LTH, will give a presentation on her work about “Investigation of brake wear particle emissions from heavy-duty vehicles”.


Particulate emissions have become an increasing concern for air quality and are now regulated by the EU standard. Brake system manufacturers are adapting their products to meet the new Euro regulations aimed at reducing both exhaust and non-exhaust emissions, particularly those generated from brake wear. While passenger vehicle brake emissions have been extensively studied, limited data exist for heavy-duty vehicles. This study aims to address this gap by analysing brake wear emissions from three commercial heavy-duty vehicle brake pad materials under two controlled sliding conditions.

A dedicated experimental setup was used. It is composed of a PoD tribometer, a condensation particle counter (CPC), and a MiniWRAS spectrometer to measure the coefficient of friction, wear mass loss, temperature, and brake wear emissions (including PM10, PM2.5, and particle number concentration). Additionally, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and LOM (light optical microscope) were used to examine the worn surfaces.

The results show differences in wear loss rate, friction, particulate matter, particle number concentration, and temperature among the three pad materials. We also noticed that high temperatures significantly influence wear, friction, and particle emissions. One pad consistently emitted the lowest PM levels, while another generated the highest.

The findings highlight the complex interplay among material properties, operating conditions, and emission behaviour, underlining the need for further research on heavy-duty brake system emissions.
