Breakfast seminar: 10 back, 10 forward for the European food system *Fully booked*
Welcome to a breakfast seminar focusing on European food systems. We will discuss the key developments that have shaped how we produce, distribute, and consume food over the past ten years, and reflect on what is needed to transform the food system in the future.
Food production and consumption are major drivers of climate change, land degradation, deforestation and biodiversity loss. Radically redesigning how food is produced, processed and distributed is key for sustainable, healthy and equitable societies.
What impact have European agricultural policies had on reducing emissions from farming? What can new biotechnology techniques mean for resilience and more climate-friendly food products? And how can new ways of growing, distributing, sharing, and consuming food support transformation?
We will hear reflections from three researchers with expertise in European agricultural policy, biotechnology, and urban food sharing who will share their perspectives on challenges and opportunities for the European food system. The event will conclude with a Q&A.
Participants
- Mark Brady, researcher at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (MGeo), and analyst at AgriFood Economics Centre

The breakfast seminar series 10 back, 10 forward
This seminar is part of the breakfast seminar series 10 back, 10 forward during the Sustainability Week 2026. During this seminar series we explore key outcomes and future directions for some of our most pressing sustainability challenges: renewable energy, biodiversity, food systems, and climate change.
Across four events, researchers will present a historical perspective on the progress and lessons learned from the past decade for each challenge, and share their perspectives on what they hope to see unfold in the future.
