Mötesplats Rydberg - Revisiting the photoelectric effect using interferometry
At Mötesplats Rydberg 20 October:
Revisiting the photoelectric effect using interferometry
With David Busto, Associate senior lecturer at Atomic Physics.
Abstract
Einstein’s explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 played an important role in the development of quantum mechanics. Today, this effect underpins a wide range of techniques used to probe matter, such as microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy. When ionization is induced by ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet pulses, a broad range of continuum states can be populated, forming a photoelectron wave packet. This allows us to address raises new questions about the photoelectric effect: How fast does ionization occur? To what extent is the emitted electron coherent? And how is its quantum state affected by entanglement with the remaining ion?
In this presentation, I will introduce attosecond photoelectron interferometry and show how it allows us to address these questions. I will start by discussing the characterization of coherent photoelectron wave packets using the RABBIT technique, before introducing the KRAKEN quantum-state tomography protocol, which gives access to the photoelectron density matrix. I will show how this allows us to investigate entanglement in photoionization and discuss our ongoing efforts to further develop this approach. Finally, I will discuss how we can go from characterizing photoelectron wave packets to using them to tests fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics.
