Fascinating research at LTH: Atomic physics

– Published 19 August 2014

Peer into a world that we’ve long since known existed, but have only recently been able to see – the world of the electrons! A world of incredibly small, and speedy, phenomena.

Physics professor Anne L’Huillier explores this world with the help of ultra-short camera flashes – attosecond pulses (a billionth of a billionth of a second).

Using this method, she can study questions fundamental to the subject of atomic physics. It can be about measuring what happens when an atom becomes an ion, or where, when and how electrons leave an atom, and also how fast different electrons move.

During the spring of 2014, the filmmaker Peter Norqvist visited a number of prominent research groups at the Faculty of Engineering, LTH, at Lund University. The result was 14 short films (three minutes each), that give an insight into the wide variety of exciting research areas LTH is home to.
