To benefit the built environment

Social and environmental challenges place new demands on the built environment. Cities must be able to withstand a more unpredictable climate while providing good living environments for everyone.

LTH conducts research in all areas associated with the concept of built environment – construction, architecture, surveying, infrastructure, energy-smart technology and transport.

LTH researchers are seeking solutions for the housing and workplaces of the future. They provide assessments of materials and structures that stand the test of time and demonstrate how construction processes can be improved. They have expertise in energy-efficient, damp-proof and fire-safe construction, as well as in how lighting and architecture affect people.

Among LTH’s researchers are experts investigating how rising sea levels, increased wind exposure and torrential rain affect the built environment. They can identify the measures required to prevent cities from flooding and coastal areas from being engulfed by the sea, and show how infrastructure and buildings can be adapted to a changing climate.

Some LTH researchers focus on circular construction. Others explore how the smart city of the future should function and how it can be protected against cyber threats and intrusion.

At LTH, civil engineers conduct research on roads, public transport systems and cycling infrastructure, as well as on creating safe traffic environments for all. There are architects researching sustainable living environments for the future, and surveyors with in-depth knowledge of the conflicts of interest associated with the use of land.
