To benefit life
Engineering and technology offer hope that more people around the world will have access to sufficient food and the right medical treatment.
A wide range of medical technology research is carried out at LTH. The proximity to one of Sweden’s largest medical faculties and Skåne University Hospital has contributed to research breakthroughs that have made a real difference to people's lives.
Many LTH researchers are developing biomarkers that can provide early warning of cancer and other diseases. Some are taking new approaches to detecting bacteria in the bloodstream, while others are tracking angina and atrial fibrillation using new ultrasound methods.
Mathematicians are improving the interpretation of X-ray images through advanced algorithms. Biotechnology researchers are developing super-sensitive sensors capable of detecting difficult-to-identify viruses. Others are developing prebiotics and probiotics. Nanotechnology offers new possibilities for repairing damaged nerves, while other researchers are studying in detail how mechanical strain affects the skeleton and biological tissues.
LTH also possesses considerable expertise in understanding how different particles in the air affect human health. Research covers everything from ventilation systems that reduce the spread of infection to studies of the relationship between preeclampsia and exposure to air pollution.
Food researchers at LTH are showing that the right food can work like medicine. They design technologies and processes for new foods and contribute to the development of safer and more resilient food systems.
