81 new doctors to be conferred at LTH

The month of May in Lund traditionally concludes with the doctoral degree conferment ceremony. In 2026, Faculty of Engineering, LTH will confer 81 new PhD graduates, two honorary doctors and six jubilee doctors during a ceremonial conferment act in Lund Cathedral on Friday, 29 May. Lund University has held doctoral degree conferment ceremonies since 1670.

The doctoral degree conferment ceremony is Lund University’s largest academic celebration. During the ceremony, PhD graduates who have defended their doctoral theses during the year at one of the University’s nine faculties are formally conferred.

As a symbol of their new academic status, each PhD graduate receives three insignia: the diploma, the doctoral hat (or laurel wreath), and the ring.

During the traditional ceremony, honorary doctors appointed by the faculties are also conferred, while those who received their doctoral degrees fifty years ago are awarded the title of jubilee doctor (doctor jubilaris).

The academic procession departs from AF-borgen to Lund Cathedral at 12:00 noon. The ceremony lasts approximately three hours, and the procession is expected to return to the University Main Building between 3:00 and 4:00 PM. The public is welcome to watch the procession to and from the Cathedral, but the ceremony itself is open to invited guests only.

The conferment act begins with an address from the Vice-Chancellor and is followed by the conferral ceremonies of the nine faculties, during which the new doctors are conferred. The entire ceremony is conducted in Latin.

A cannon salute is fired several times during the ceremony as a tribute to the principal participants of the conferment act:

  • each presenter is saluted with one shot
  • each faculty’s jubilee doctors receive one collective shot
  • each honorary doctor is saluted with one shot
  • the newly conferred doctors of each faculty are saluted with two shots

Beginning at 12:00 noon and continuing at regular intervals throughout the afternoon, a total of 50 salute shots will be fired in Lundagård by the Wendes Salute Battery.

After the conferment act, one of the new PhD graduates delivers a ceremonial address — an oratio — to the University. The ceremony concludes with a Latin prayer by Bishop Johan Tyrberg.

Doctoral degree conferment ceremonies have been held in Lund since 1670. LTH held its first and so far only independent ceremony in 1967. Since 1969, LTH has been part of Lund University.

Honorary Doctors

LTH has appointed Gustaf Ramel and Margret Bauer honorary doctors for 2026. The title of honorary doctor at LTH is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding professional contributions of significance to LTH’s research activities. Such contributions are characterised by scientific excellence, substantial importance to research infrastructure, and/or significant impact on industry or society connected to LTH research.

The Division of Water Resources Engineering at LTH has collaborated with farmer and landowner Gustaf Ramel on innovative and resilient agriculture through the WATERAGRI project, which focused on water, environment and agriculture during the years 2020–2024.

Margret Bauer, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), has played a leading role in “Historical Female Influencers in Automatic Control”, a multi-year project highlighting women who have made important contributions to the development of automatic control engineering. Between 2021 and 2024, Margret Bauer also served as Lise Meitner Professor at LTH.

Doctor’s hat

The Doctor’s hat symbolises freedom and power. It is covered with black, pleated fabric. The theology hat features a black bow, while the other faculties’ hats have a gold buckle at the front specific to the relevant faculty. LTH's doctoral hat has LTH's former square-triangle-circle emblem.

Ring

The ring is made of gold and symbolises loyalty to science. The ring is handed out to all new Doctoral graduates and to the Honorary Doctors. The rings are marked with a symbol specific to the relevant faculty. LTH's Doctoral ring is adorned with a pattern of the triangle and square, and the circle of LTH's former emblem is also printed in the ring's shape. The ring was designed in 1967 by silversmith Birger Pellas when LTH was still an independent university.

Diploma

The diploma was at the outset a written confirmation of the rights awarded to Doctoral graduates. The diplomas distributed to the graduands in the Cathedral are in Latin and carry the University seal. Previously, the diplomas were handed out by a young boy representing the god Apollo. As the graduands became more numerous, the task became overwhelming for a five-year-old so a ceremonial officer took over.
