Abstract: Software testing is the most frequently used software quality assurance technique with a high ratio of the overall project costs. Recent studies show a high potential for improvement in test processes which is often addressed by additional testers or more test time. Both measures cause additional costs but their effect on detected faults and therefore the quality of the released software is often low. In this talk, we present two recently developed cost-neutral software testing approaches, namely a novel risk-based testing approach and testing with defect taxonomies, which significantly improve the effectiveness of software testing by increasing the detection rate for critical faults. For each presented testing approach we first discuss how it is used in all phases of the standard system test process comprising test planning, design, execution and evaluation. Then, we show by industrial case studies how risk-based testing and testing with defect taxonomies can improve the effectiveness of system testing. Finally, we present practical considerations for applying the approaches and highlight directions of future research.

Presenter: Michael Felderer is an assistant professor and project manager within the Quality Engineering research group at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He holds a PhD in computer science. His research interests include testing and software quality in general, empirical software engineering as well as requirements engineering. He works in close cooperation with industry and transfers his research results into practice as a consultant and speaker at industrial conferences.
