Education in information literacy for students

The libraries at LTH offer education in information literacy. The aim is to strengthen students’ ability to think and act information literate, in their studies as well as members of society.

According to The Higher Education Act, first- and second-cycle courses and study programmes shall develop the ability of students to make independent and critical assessments of scientific information, and to stay abreast with the development of knowledge within their fields (The Higher Education Act 1992:1434 § 8-9). In cooperation with university departments, libraries should contribute to the fulfilling of these aims. 

Our goal is a progression within learning, where students go through three different educational steps in order to develop an increasingly critical and independent approach towards information retrieval and source criticism.

As a teacher at LTH you can choose which part/s you want to include in your course and at what level you want to teach. The teaching is planned and organised in a collaboration between teacher and librarian.

Step 1

45 minutes. Suitable for year 1

The training session contains basic information about library resources and services, and a review of the search process emphasising search words, source criticism, and scientific articles.

After the teaching session students should:

  • know about library resources
  • be able to work with search words based on a search question
  • know the difference between a scientific article and an article within the popular science genre
  • know why source references are important

The training session can be combined with a workshop in a computer room where students are given the opportunity to turn what they have learnt into practice.

Step 2

45 minutes. Suitable in connection to independent work, like the writing of a report.

The training session contains an overview of the search process focusing on different search services and their area of use, advanced search techniques and source criticism. Also, in this session we look into the management of references and academic integrity.

After the training session students should:

  • know about differences in the content and area of use for different search services
  • be able to use advanced search techniques
  • be able to critically compare, review and evaluate sources of information
  • be able to explain the meaning of academic integrity and manage references in a correct way

Step 1 and step 2 can be combined in sessions of 45 + 45 minutes

The training session can also be combined with a workshop in a computer room where students are given the opportunity to turn what they have learnt into practice.

Step 3

45 minutes. Suitable before degree projects.

This training session contains in-depth information retrieval in the form of citation searches, building block strategy, subject word searches and the monitoring of searches. In this session, we also look into search protocols and reference management software.

After the training session students should:

  • be able to search in citation databases
  • be able to use search history and thesaurus
  • be able to organise and document their search process
  • have knowledge of and, if needed, be able to use reference management software

The training session can be combined with a workshop in a computer room where students are given the opportunity to turn what they have learnt into practice.

Step 2 and step 3 can also be combined in sessions of 45 + 45 minutes

Training sessions can be adjusted according to demands.
