Wind Power Systems

The need for renewable electricity is constantly growing due to climate change and population growth. The expansion of non-fossil alternatives is increasing as a result of global and national goals on renewables. In Sweden, the electricity certificate system has been a driving force for the expansion of renewables, but is about to be phased out as a result of declining costs for construction and operation of wind power. Wind power is expected to progressively take a much higher share as existing nuclear power decreases and likely is decommissioned before 2040 in Sweden. With higher share of renewable electricity, the electric power system will need to be more flexible as a result of reduced regulatory margins. In order to maintain high operational reliability of electricity supply, the requirements for wind power systems will increase. Especially for newly established and ongoing expansion of large-scale wind power plants, both onshore and offshore.

The wind power system course is of great relevance for a sustainable transformation of the energy system where wind power is one of the most expansive renewable energy sources. The course aims to provide basic knowledge in various aspects of wind power and its use in society as a part of ongoing energy transition away from fossil use. It also aims to identify and explain wind power technologies and the design of wind power plants and their integration with power systems in a technical context.
