The examining committee may consist of either three or five members. Supervisors may not sit on the examining committee. In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, at least one member of the examination committee should not be engaged in any activity at the University where the doctoral student is examined. At least one substitute shall be appointed in case a member of the examining committee is unable to attend owing to unforseen circumstances. The composition of the examining committee must fulfil the requirements given even if an ordinary member is replaced. Efforts should be made to ensure that the examining committee has both male and female members. In particular, at least one member should be of the same sex as the doctoral student.
It is recommended that at least two members should have 'docentkompetens' or equivalent qualification, and moreover, at least one member of the committee must be engaged at a different university.
