Health care and insurance
Fee-paying student
As a fee-paying student staying in Sweden for more than a year you should apply for a Swedish personal identity number at the tax office. This entitles you to pay the same reduced patient fees for all public health care as Swedish citizens.
On top of that you are covered by an insurance through the university, FAS+. This insurance gives a coverage 24-hours a day within Sweden.
Non-paying student
As a European student you most likely have an EHIC card. We still recommend that you apply for a Swedish personal identity number at the tax office. This entitles you to pay the same reduced patient fees for all public health care as Swedish citizens.
On top of that you are covered by an insurance through the university, Student IN. This insurance gives a coverage 24-hours a day within Sweden.
Students in joint programmes
Students with LU as their home university are covered by the Student IN insurance in Sweden during the whole programme (including semesters abroad and the summer break). During semesters spent at a partner university you are covered by the Student OUT insurance.
Students with a another home university than LU are covered by the Student IN insurance during the semester you study at Lund University. This insurance is only valid in Sweden. During the semesters you study at another university than LU you need to enquire with that university if you are covered by any insurance through them or not.
All FIPDes students are covered by the Marsh insurance during the duration of the programme. Information on terms and conditions and claim procedure can be found on the insurance company web pages.
IMFSE students are covered by an insurance from Expat & Co.

All students are covered by the Expat&Co student insurance (basic version). It covers unexpected medical expenses, provides accident cover and protects against some costs arising from civil liabilities (a kind of third-party insurance which is required in many European countries). The insurance will also provide assistance if you lose your passport, tickets or other travel documents. All students receive an insurance certificate by email before the start of the programme. You can find the general conditions and claim forms on the Expat&Co website.

Coverage and procedure, FAS+, Student IN and Student OUT
The insurances FAS+, Student IN and Student OUT cover part of your expenses for acute illness and accidents.
Please note that from 1 July (Student IN)/1 Aug (FAS+) only patient fees exceeding 400 SEK per visit are reimbursed. Injuries caused by high risk activities such as deep sea diving, mountain/rock climbing, offpist skiing, skydiving etc are not reimbursed.
These insurances also contains a liability coverage, a dental coverage and a property coverage.
The insurances don’t cover planned medical care. You are covered for emergency medical care which is defined in the terms and conditions as "symptoms that arise suddenly during the insurance period and for which the insured must seek medical aid within a few days.”
This means that if you visit the health care clinic or the hospital for acute illness you can get part of the money (amounts exceeding 400 SEK) back for the doctor’s appointment and for any prescribed medicine. Please follow these steps:
- Go to the doctor
- Pay the fee (if possible, otherwise turn to Cecilia Nilsson at the International Office LTH)
- Save the original receipts
- Fill in the claim form (preferably digitally but with a signature by hand)
- Scan the claim form and the receipts and submit them to Cecilia Nilsson at the International Office LTH who will sign and send it to the insurance company Kammarkollegiet.
Please note that the receipts should be sent as a separate file/files (as an attachment) and not be embedded into the email.
Email Cecilia Nilsson
Kammarkollegiet will review and reimburse the money within approximately one-two month/s (depending on their work load).
Please note that Lund University cannot determine if you are eligible for reimbursement by the insurance. It is always Kammarkollegiet that determines your eligibility. You should always try to file a claim form if you are unsure. Kammarkollegiet will base their evaluation on the information you state in the claim form.
