LTH AEROSOLS seminar: “Secondary aerosol formation in polar regions” by Carlton Xavier

Iceberg in polar region
From: 2023-05-24 11:15 to 12:00 Seminarium

Carlton Xavier is a postdoc at the division of Nuclear Physics and will give a talk about secondary aerosol formation in polar regions.

The main biogenic secondary aerosol precursors in boreal and Arctic marine environments are monoterpenes and dimethyl sulfide (DMS). Atmospheric secondary aerosols contribute to the formation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). CCN influences Earth’s radiation budget by altering the long and short-wave radiation budgets. The Arctic environments is susceptible to changes in radiation budget, since it affects for example, the summer sea-ice loss and related biological activity. Increased Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), nitrogen volatiles and biological iodine emissions from ice free Arctic regions impact natural secondary aerosol production in the Arctic area. The work focuses on understanding the role of DMS and monoterpene oxidation products in the formation and growth of new secondary aerosols in polar and boreal environments.
