This course is intended to assist graduate students in developing skills in speaking effectively about complex technical information.
The majority of the class will be taken up with students' practicing spoken English and getting feedback on the effectiveness and correctness of their language skills.
In the first weeks, students will give short impromptu and prepared talks in pairs and small groups.
In the final weeks, students will deliver formal talks in front of 5 or 6 members of the class
If students wish, they may use the practice talks to prepare for actual speaking tasks such as:
In each class there will be brief lecture-discussion periods about communication theory and speaking strategies.
Work on vocabulary, style and grammar will be taken up during the entire course whenever it is relevant for the particular communicative task being practiced.

This portion of the course is to help students understand the communicative purposes behind vocabulary choices and organizational conventions in each of the sections of a typical research article. In the lecture/discussion classes, students learn techniques in reading and analyze research articles in science and engineering in general. They then use these skills in small-group workshops to analyze articles in their fields.
