Reading Skills and the Discourse of the Research Article

Svensk titel: Tolkning av vetenskaplig information, 3hp
Course Description:
Reading the Discourse of the Technical Research Article is intended to help graduate students at LTH improve their efficiency and effectiveness in:

  • Reading and understanding research articles in science and engineering in general and their own fields of research in particular
  • Thinking critically about the discourse choices made by authors in published texts

In the lecture/discussion classes (16 hours), each of the sections of a typical research article is treated in turn. The focus is on students’ developing skills in analyzing the communicative purposes behind the vocabulary choices, sentence formulations, organizational conventions used / not used by published authors.

Each lecture is followed by an hour-long small-group discussion workshop in which students apply the analytical techniques learned to research articles which they have chosen from their own fields.

Class hours
16 hours of lectures / 4 hours in small-group discussion
