EMS Summer School 2017

The Membrane Group at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Lund University is very happy to organise the 34th European Membrane Society (EMS) Summer School with the topic “Membranes in Biorefineries”.

Biorefineries are the backbone of “white biotechnology”, the 3rd wave of biotechnology, which aims to replace classic C2/C3 chemistry by biotechnological processes. The aim of this Summer School is to bring together leading European scientists and industrialists in the areas of membrane technology and biorefineries with students and young researchers to discuss and explore main aspects of membrane processes and how they can be used in biorefineries.

The Summer School will bring together 25 lecturers from 9 different European countries with approx. 60 international participants.

We hope with this EMS Summer School we hope to support the transition of our society from a society largely dependent on fossil-based materials to a climate-smart society based on biomass.

Centre for Engineering Education lunch seminar

We invite you to join us at our next lunch seminar! Every term the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) hosts brown bag seminars for both students and staff at LTH.

On April 28 Satu Maaninen, Ellen Turner, and Cecilia Wadsö Lecaros from the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) will discuss their massive open online course (MOOC), “Writing in English at University”.

The course is available free of charge on the Coursera platform and provides helpful writing support for students, particularly those working on their thesis projects. The course is also useful for researchers and others who are writing in non-native speaker environments. In their presentation, the authors will also discuss ways in which this MOOC has been integrated into on-campus teaching (blended learning).

UCPH Summer School in Nano-Science (June 26 – 30, 2017)

Two new facilities for probing nanoscale structures, European Spallation Source (neutron facility) and MAX-IV Laboratory (X-ray synchrotron facility), will be opened for the scientific community.

In the UCPH Summer School for Nano-Science you will be introduced by leading scientist to a broad series of techniques that can be conducted at these new facilities and see how they are applied to study many different materials; natural and synthetic, soft and hard.

When: June 26-30, 2017
Where: Magleås Conference Center, Høsterkøb, Denmark
Deadline for registration: May 1, 2017

No registration fee for PhD students or post docs from the Øresund-Kategatt-Skagerrak area but there is a ’board and lodging’ fee of 540 € for students from other areas. Places are limited and priority is given to participants enrolled at one of the partners of MAX4ESSFUN.

Lund university infrastructure of the month – April

At Lund University we have excellent research infrastructure to support research in medicine, biology and biomedicine. Every month one special infrastructure highlights to increase the awareness of the available platforms.

The infrastructure of April is BioMAX at MAX IV

BioMAX is now up and running as the first experiment facility at MAX IV dedicated to structural biology, using x-ray crystallography.

  • Do you want to know the detailed 3D structure of a protein?
  • Are you interested to analyse large molecules and their complexes at an atomic level?
  • Do you want to find better binding molecules to your target protein?

Did you think that crystallography was too complicated with low probability of success?
Think twice – with the the toolbox and services available today you are more likely to have success with your structural biology project!

BioMAX is the perfect tool to:

  • Screen through hundreds of samples within hours
  • Investigate very small specimens
  • Solve the crystallographic phase problems using modern techniques
  • Collaborate with a highly skilled and motivated research team

March for Science

March for Science is a citizens’ initiative from the United States, launched by private citizens and researchers who want to stand up for the importance of science and research-based knowledge in society. Particular emphasis is placed on the conception that science knows no borders and that its strength and characteristics are diversity and openness.

Lund University supports the March for Science. At a time when fact resistance, alternative facts and false news regularly appear in the public debate, we want to defend source criticism, critical thinking and a scholarly approach.

Read more about why the March for Science takes place in Sweden on marchforscience.se

The March for Science closest to Lund is in Copenhagen on April 22.
