From left: Fredrik Tufvesson (supervisor), João Vieira (price receiver), Viktor Öwall (LTH dean) During the LTH exam ceremony 30 May João Vieira was received an award from Sparbanksstiftelsen Färs och Frosta of 100.000 SEK for his Phd thesis Algorithms and Proofs of Concept for Massive MIMO Systems. The dissertation was presented at the department of Electrical and Information Technology  in November 2017. The award motivation
Joao’s dissertation deals with theoretical and practical aspects of a disruptive technology, so-called massive MIMO, for 5G communication. The technology relies on a large number of cooperating antennas at the base station, maybe 100 or possibly up to 500 in the future. Joao Vieira treats and discusses aspects of his research work connected to its future application possibilities in an excellent way. The research work has already today been implemented in both academia and industry around the world. The dissertation work demonstrates excellence, and is a unique piece of work that has demonstrated that it is possible to implement a new energy and spectrum efficient communication technology, which will be one of the cornerstones in the upcoming 5G standard. The dissertation work has contributed to position LTH on the global research arena within this technology and has generated new industry and university cooperation both locally and internationally. The thesis is available for download here. .
