Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

As a PhD student or a new teacher at LTH you are invited to Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (this course is equivalent to the course Högskolepedagogisk introduktionskurs but given in english).

Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is an elective course of the qualifying programme in teaching and learning in higher education and of third-cycle education at LTH. The course provides an overview of teaching and learning in higher education and is intended for lecturers with little or no higher education teacher training and for doctoral students who teach or are about to assume teaching duties.

This course introduces you to current concepts of teaching and learning in higher education in order to develop your ability to improve student learning. It also provides an introduction for your further professional development as a university teacher.

The course is focused on students and their situation including students with special needs, the role of the teacher and his/her professional development, learning as a cognitive process, different teaching methods and their effect on students' learning, assessment and its impact on students' learning, evaluation at different levels, communication and pedagogical qualifications for teachers in higher education.

Course instruction
The course starts with a week of five full days, (see separate schedule) in which lectures are combined with group exercises and individual work. This is followed by a group project  which is to be reported 3-4 weeks later (the total workload of the project is about a week per participant). Participation on the reporting session is compulsory. To be able to pass the course the participant must have attended at least 80 % of the scheduled activities. 

Admission
To be admitted to the course, participants must normally have a first-cycle degree.

Priority is given to teaching staff and doctoral students employed at LTH with native language other than Swedish. For doctoral students the applicants with the earliest admittance date to the PhD studies are given priority.

Scope
The course corresponds to 2 weeks of full-time work and to 3 credits in third-cycle studies if this is in line with the individual study plan.
