Engineering Mathematics

MSc in Engineering, 5 years, 300 hp (ECTS Credits)

There are at least two important reasons for studying mathematics:

- it’s fun
- it’s extremely useful

and both these aspects of mathematics are developed in the programme of Engineering Mathematics at LTH.

This programme is for those who have an interested in mathematics and its various applications. Apart from a considerable amount of mathematics, students at this programme will obtain a broad basis in engineering, scientific and economic subjects, providing opportunities for a wide range of future careers. So far is Engineering Mathematics in Lund the only programme of its kind in Sweden. 

The programme

The foundation for the programme is laid during the first three years. From the start, students study many mathematical subjects, more than in any other master’s programme, and the continued studies are based on this. Computer science is also a central subject. Besides mathematics, students are provided with a broad basis in engineering subjects, biology and economics. Other important components of the programme are training in mathematical modelling and how to communicate mathematical arguments, both verbally and in writing.

Areas of specialisation

After the first three years, students choose an area of specialisation:

  • Computation and simulation
  • Biological and medical modelling
  • Financial modelling
  • The environment, risk and climate
  • Signals, images and systems

Within each area of specialisation, students take relevant courses from applications as well as mathematical subjects. There are also many elective courses. The programme includes a degree project, which may be theoretical or practical. It is also possible to delve deeper into the world of pure mathematics.

The programme is based on the wide range of mathematical research carried out at LTH, both pure and applied. Great advantage is gained from the fact that LTH is part of Lund University, which makes it possible to combine mathematics with areas such as biology, economics, medicine and the environment.
