Taking an examination

Please note that it is never a right to take an exam if you have not registered in advance.

If there are places left, there is still an opportunity for you to take the exam.

Read more on what to do if you did not register in advance

Before the exam:

  • You are sent an email when the exam is open for registration. The registration is usually open for two weeks and the registration deadline is specified in the email.
Please note that emails are sent for each exam period, including retake exam periods, so you do not necessarily need to register each time you receive such an email.
  • Register for the exam
Please note that you always need to register, even for first exam opportunities
  • Check that you have registered correctly by logging in the Student Portal and go to the exam service. It should be stated that you are registered.
  • You are assigned an anonymised assessment code. You do not need to remember it, as you will receive it from the invigilator at the exam, when they will check your ID.
If something goes wrong and you are not assigned an anonymised assessment code at the exam, you must write your name and personal identity number on the cover sheet and on all sheets of the exam.

During the exam:

  • Present valid photo identification.
  • Always follow the instructions you are given.
  • Only use writing material (notepaper, etc.) handed out by the invigilators—never use notes or paper you have brought with you.
  • Turn off your mobile phone and other technical equipment and put them in the place assigned by the invigilator.
  • Write your anonymised assessment code and a personal identifier (read more about the personal identifier) on the exam cover sheet (in front of the invigilator) and on each sheet of the exam you are submitting. Write the anonymised assessment code at the top of the sheet and the personal identifier at the bottom.

The responsible lecturer is normally available during parts of the exam to answer more specific questions. You may bring drinks or snacks into the exam.

After the exam

  • You are sent an email when the grades are reported into Ladok. You can see your result on the Student Portal.
  • You may retrieve your anonymised assessment code in the Student's Portal even after the exam date. This can be useful, e.g. when you are given exam feedback

Teaching staff will only see the anonymised assessment code when marking your exam. The exam will be marked anonymously.

After marking your exam, the lecturer will submit a list of all the results to the administrator (digitally or on paper) who will enter the results for each anonymised assessment code in Ladok. Before the examiner verifies the results by signing, they can see which code belongs to each student (as required by Swedish law).

If you did not register in advance

If you did not register you might still be able to you to take the exam if there is availability of places and copied exam scripts.

  • The day of the exam you must enter your name and personal number on the list next to the entrance of the exam hall. It is the responsibility of non-registered students to notify that they did not register previously.
  • You must wait outside the room until the invigilator or teacher lets you in. You are never to enter the hall without having been designated a place. If you enter the exam hall without having been assigned a place, you will be expelled from the exam. You might have to wait up to 60 minutes, and there is no right to be admitted if there are no places left.
  • Your exam will not be marked anonymously. You will need to write your personal identity number and name on the exam.

For first take exams in courses in the first year of studies after study period 1 and 2, the department should always ensure that there are enough places for all students in the course, even those who have not registered.

If you are unable to register

In some cases, the course/exam is not available for registration in the Student Portal. This might be due to different reasons.

If you are unable to self-register you may register through your department’s course administrator. You will then receive an anonymised assessment code.

In the following cases you will not be able to receive an anonymised assessment code and will need to take the exam without anonymity:

  • If the course is outdated, i.e. if when you started the course it had different so-called exam codes (e.g. if the number of credits or grading scale has changed).
  • If you are not registered on the course
  • If you have already received a passing grade on the exam, but you want to retake it.

Do you need any special support?

If you have a disability, for example dyslexia, a visual impairment or ADHD, you have access to exam support, e.g. additional time, opportunity to sit in private rooms etc.

To have access to exam support you must submit a request both to the relevant teaching staff and through the Student Portal.

You must notify your course director of your special support request no later than three weeks before the course exam. This applies even if the exam registration system allows for more time to register, in order to give us sufficient time to meet your requests. The Student Portal is generally open for requests from three to one week before the exam period starts (see below for exact dates-anchor).

If you are taking the exam in a different location you will receive the anonymised assessment code from the invigilator (upon registration).
