Degree project - Industrial Design (MSc)
Guidelines and advice for Master’s degree projects at the Department of Design Sciences
The Faculty of Engineering, LTH provides information on Master’s degree projects here. Students are expected to have read this information. The following additional information is specific for degree projects carried out at the Department of Design Sciences.
1. Before starting a degree project
How can I find a degree project placement?
Contact someone at the division where you intend to do your degree project and tell that person about your work intentions. Your first choice should be a teacher you have had in a course, otherwise one of following:

If you are planning to carry out your degree project at a company or organisation, you need to get in contact with them before you start and draw up a contract regarding intellectual property rights, third party involvement, and similar issues. Either the company will have its own agreement form or you can use the Agreement for Master’s Degree Project and Thesis available from the course administrator. If you are unsure about any of these issues, contact the examiner. When the degree project is carried out at a company, a number of practical questions usually arise regarding confidentiality, contacts, compensation, accommodation, travel, etc. These are discussed by the student with his or her company contact and should be approved by all parties (student, supervisor, examiner, host company) before the project begins. The supervisor, company and student should also agree on what is acceptable to write in the final report (also referred to as a Master’s thesis) and at what level of detail in order for the student to be able to have it approved. The company must also be informed that the report is a public document and will be published in LUP (Lund University Publications Database).
2. Initial phase
Procedure during the initial phase

. Get it signed by your program planner. Then get it signed by your supervisor(s) and examiner once they have approved your document defining the goals of the degree project. It is your responsibility to make sure that the form is signed by all parties. Then you submit it to the division’s course administrator who will ensure that your program planner registers you in the degree projectcourse.
You will receive an email from the course administrator with an attached report template. Please use this for the ongoing documentation of your degree project work. You will also be asked to fill in a second template with information about yourself including your name and your photo to be posted in the Department. As a degree project student at the Department of Design Sciences, you are welcome to use one of the desks in the offices that are available in the south corridors on levels 4 and 5. You will have access to the rooms when you are registered. You may also use the kitchens on levels 4 and 5, but please avoid the lunch hour rush between 11:30 and 12:30. Please do not use the general staff areas as a workplace (kitchen tables or sofas).
Document defining the goals of the degree project
You need to write a document defining the goals of the degree project and it must be approved before you start the project. See the instructions on
. Send the document to your supervisor for approval. After that the real work begins.
3. Planning phase

4. Execution phase
It is important that you make arrangements with your supervisor about when to meet during your project course work. Email your supervisor regarding the date and time and points to discuss, so he/she will be able to prepare. The supervisors have teaching and other commitments and usually cannot accept students who have not booked appointments in advance.
To facilitate the communication with your supervisor, the filename of the current version of your report should be like this for student working in pairs: last name1_last name2_150819 (date at the end: year/month/day). This reduces confusion. Also agree with your supervisor on what format is best suited for your communication: Word, PDF or something else.

Follow the report template that you received in the email from your course administrator, see section 2.
In addition to the report, you need to write a popular science summary. You can find a guide for writing one onLTH's website.
It can be written in English or Swedish. Use pictures if possible and remember that this summary may be used in brochures, in newspapers or online. This should be completed before the final oral presentation.
The Department of Design Sciences has decided that to complete your degree project with us, you have to have one or more opponents (unless there are special reasons not to do so) at your final oral presentation. The opponent should be a fellow student. It is helpful if you can find someone willing to be your opponent early on. You can not be an opponent of a fellow student who has been or will be the opponent of your own work.
5. Concluding phase
Do the following as you approach the end of your degree project:
- When you consider your degree project report to be complete, send it by email to your supervisor. The supervisor will review the report. If approved, he or she will let you know that it is ready for the oral presentation. If not, you will need to revise the report based on the supervisor’s comments. The supervisor is not responsible for proofreading (either in Swedish or English). Keep in mind that people unfamiliar with your work should be able to read and understand the report. This places high demands on accuracy and clarity in your written language. Please note that this review by your supervisor is only to confirm that the report meets the requirements for the oral presentation.
- If you have not already done so, find a opponent. It is up to you to find a suitable fellow student.
- You are responsible for coordinating the date and time of the presentation with the supervisor, examiner and opponent. When everyone agrees, it is your responsibility to inform all the parties of the final decision. Then ask the course administrator, at least two weeks before the presentation date, to book a room and officially notify the Department.
- Once the date for the oral presentation of the degree project report is decided, it has to be officially announced at LTH. You do this by filling in the form “Annonsera din presentation”, LTH form (in Swedish). This is a means for additional students looking for degree project reports to oppose can find yours (and vice versa).
- Please feel free to invite friends and family to the presentation.
- No later than one week before the agreed date for the presentation, the opponent, supervisor and examiner have to receive the latest version of the report.
- Prepare the oral presentation of your degree project, usually in the form of a PPT file.
We usually calculate an hour for the presentation. Discuss this with your supervisor and agree on how long it should take.
- 5 min. introduction: supervisor
- 20-25 min. oral presentation: degree project student
- If needed, make sure you book a computer and projector in advance at the front desk on level 2. Start your presentation at a level at which everyone can understand what it is about and what problem you are trying to solve. Rehearse your presentation so that you do not go over the time allotted.
- 15 min for the opposition and questions from the opponent and from the audience and the examiner.
- You are responsible for ensuring that the Summary of the activities in a degree project form is completed by the examiner at this time in order for your opposition to formally be approved.
The opponents are primarily there to ask questions and discuss the content of the work and report, not to cite the written opposition report in detail. Opponents could e.g. ask questions about things that are unclear or unfinished in the report, inconsistencies or questions about choices of methods, implementations or tools used. Make sure the presenting students can show their expertise rather than pointing out their weaknesses in too great detail. Conclude with a short assessment of their work, and send detailed comments to them in an e-mail for example.
Finalise the degree project report and summary and make the relevant changes that were requested during the opposition. Then send the updated version to the supervisor and examiner for their final assessment. This updated version is expected to have high quality regarding structure, language and style, and to follow the template. You should clearly state what changes you made by describing them briefly in the email to which you attach and submit the report. When the report and summary have been approved by the examiner, he/she signs the remaining boxes of the Summary of activities in a degree project form. Then it is your responsibility to submit this form to the course administrator.
If you want a printed copy you are required to pay by yourself. If a company has been involved, they may also want to have a number of printed copies of the report. Come to an agreement with them on who will cover the costs.
Once the report is approved, you are responsible for entering it as a PDF in LUP (Lund University Publications). You log in to LUP with your StiL. If you have difficulty with the login, contact the course administrator for assistance. A publication can be registered in LUP with different levels of visibility; consult your supervisor for the appropriate level for your report. Please keep in mind that regardless of the selected level of visibility, the report will be considered a public document. This means that anyone can request a copy. All degree project reports must be stored in LUP because this is the university's archive for publications. Once this is done, the result is registered in Ladok.
