Experimental Methodology

What is an experiment? More importantly, what characterizes a good experiment? This course aims to answer these questions and speed up your journey to becoming a proficient experimenter. Built around practical examples and exercises, it explains general concepts and techniques that are applied across a wide range of experimental fields. A central part of the learning process is a small research project where these concepts and techniques are applied.

The course will help you understand basic concepts in science theory and how to apply them in practice. You will learn about the difference between experimentation and passive observation, and to plan and carry out experiments that result in explanatory knowledge. It also explains how to apply important statistical tools throughout your research process.

The course is given from March 22nd to the end of May 2016. In addition to lectures and exercises it consists of a small research project where the course contents are applied. The project results are presented in a short paper which is peer reviewed by other participants and presented at a final workshop. To pass the course you must pass the written exam and participate in the project work, as well as attend a majority of the 14 lectures and exercises.
