Working hours, time off and holidays

Working hours

All employees at the Faculty of Engineering are covered by Lund University's central agreement regarding flexible working hours, with the exception of cleaners, teachers and animal maintenance staff, for whom separate agreements apply.

Flexible hours

The standard working hours for full-time employees is 8 hours per day. A lunch break is not included in the working hours.

The flexible hours for full-time employees are between 07.00-09.00 in the morning and 15.00-19.00 in the afternoon. A lunch break may be taken at any time between 11.30 and 13.30.

Public holidays

Public holidays are days off from work, and are known in Sweden as 'red days'.  The public holidays observed at Lund University include:

  • New Year's Day (1 January)
  • Good Friday and Easter Monday (varies year to year)
  • First of May (1 May)
  • Sweden's national day (6 June)
  • Midsummer's Eve (always a Friday in June)
  • Christmas Eve (24 December)
  • Christmas Day (25 December)
  • Boxing Day (26 December)
  • New Year’s Eve

Reduced working hours

For full-time employees the working hours on certain days are reduced by the number of hours shown in the list below. For part-time employees, the working hours are reduced in proportion to their total working hours.

  • Twelfth Night: 4 hours
  • Maundy Thursday: 2 hours
  • 30 April when it is a

    • Monday–Thursday: 2 hours
    • Friday: 4 hours

  • The Friday of the first weekend in November (All Hallow’s Eve): 4 hours
  • 23 December when it is a Friday: 4 hours

Please note! Time off in lieu is not given for public holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

"Squeeze days"

A "squeeze day", or "klämdag" as it's called in Swedish, can be seen as a bonus holiday, and is a day that is squeezed in between a public holiday and another day off or weekend. For instance, if a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, then the Monday is given as a holiday as well.

Not all employees are entitled to take squeeze days off - check with your manager or supervisor if you are unsure of what applies to you.

Annual leave/vacation

All employees have the right to take a certain number of paid days annual leave each year. The number of paid days leave you get depends on your age, but will be at least 28 days for each full calendar year you are employed at the University. Speak to your manager or supervisor to find out how many holidays you are entitled to. You can also check your holiday balance in Primula Web (link below).

You are entitled to your paid holidays as soon as your employement begins, however if you start in the middle of a calendar year then you will only receive the equivalent proportion of holidays. For example, if your employment terms starts on 1 July, then you will receive roughly 50% of a full-year holiday allowance.

Leave of absence

There may be times when you need to take time off work outside of your holidays, for example in the event of doctor appointments, illness, a family bereavement, or maternity/paternity leave.
