Chasing the storm
It is half past three in the morning on one of the last nights of October. Storm Babet is raging and most people are trying to sleep through the sound of the wind, but coastal researchers at LTH are wide awake. Strong winds combined with high water levels are a warning sign for communities on the south coast of Skåne, and that’s where the [...]
Physicist, chemist and study techniques expert are LTH’s new honorary doctors
Eva Lindroth, professor of Theoretical Physics at Stockholm University, Sabeth Verpoorte, professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Groningen, and Björn Liljeqvist, study techniques expert and Mensa chairperson, have been named as LTH’s honorary doctors for 2024.
Plant waste to be transformed into food at new lab in Lund
Lund University and Tetra Pak Processing are joining forces to build one of the largest precision fermentation research facilities in the Nordics. Microorganisms will be selected, fine-tuned and trained to convert inedible waste into food and materials for a growing population.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The world is in urgent need of our knowledge, research breakthroughs, innovations and graduates. I would like to thank you for this year and all the important work we have done together, writes Annika Olsson, Dean of LTH.
Live streaming of LTH Nobel lecture
On December 18th, it's time for LTH's official celebration of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics. Then our own laureate – Professor Anne L'Huillier – will hold a Nobel lecture which will be broadcasted via LTH's YouTube channel. After the lecture, we invite you to a conversation with Anne L'Huillier, where she will answer questions from the audience [...]
"If it is fun, it is also easier to learn"
Games in teaching, creative classrooms, trust and learning – the topics addressed at the pedagogical inspiration conference at LTH were many. The conference, which aims to increase opportunities for collaboration and exchange of educational experiences, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and attracted around 100 participants.
Everyday laser flashes and real-world attosecond physics
Down in the basement of the Department of Physics, the now world-famous short laser pulses are fired almost daily. This is home to Sweden’s cutting-edge research in attosecond physics. According to Per Eng-Johnsson, professor in atomic, molecular and optical physics at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), the research field is currently in the midst [...]
The breakthroughs benefiting ultrafast laser research – and the world
Anne-Lise Viotti is an associate senior lecturer at the Division of Atomic Physics. Here, she explains three discoveries with major implications for ultrafast science and experiments with attosecond pulses.
An extraordinary, ordinary day
It is a mild day in autumn. Business as usual in the Rydbergsalen lecture theatre at Fysicum. Atomic physics is on the agenda for third-year students studying for their Master of Science in Engineering Physics. The lecture started at 10:00 and will end at 12:00, with a short break in the middle.
Five of physics' foremost researchers
Anne L'Huillier joins an exclusive – but growing – group of Nobel laureates. Only five women have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, with Marie Curie being the first.
New centre for strategic metals
A new centre is being established for “strategic metals”– critical raw materials, metals and minerals for key technologies that are important for the green transition. The centre, which is funded by SEK 60 million from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), will review possibilities for securing access to important metals and [...]
One person’s workplace, another’s home
How long does it take to comfort someone? Does an egg need to be fried rather than boiled? Lund University Magazine (LUM) invited home care researchers from the School of Social Work and the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) for a conversation. They are meeting for the first time; their discussions cover stress, responsibility and participation. Their [...]
Blue Transition measures are urgent for meeting future water needs
The water of the North Sea region is not only affected by climate change, but also by people’s use of water and land in the surroundings. In order to have continued future access to clean water – and a sufficient supply – measures need to be taken immediately. This is shown by the EU project, Blue Transition, in which Lund University participates [...]
New catalyst could provide liquid hydrogen fuel of the future
Researchers at Lund University are investigating a car fuel comprised of a liquid that is converted to hydrogen by a solid catalyst. The used liquid is then emptied from the tank and charged with hydrogen, after which it can be used again in a circular system that is free from greenhouse gas emissions.
Increase in forest fires may damage the crucial ozone layer
All particles that reach the atmosphere cause different chemical reactions. Particles come partly from natural sources such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires, and partly from pollution and emissions. Aerosol researcher Johan Friberg studies particles at high altitudes. He fears that the global increase in forest fires could have a significant [...]
