Information literacy for students

LTH Library offers teaching sessions about information literacy. The purpose is to strenghten the students' ability  to search, assess and use information, in their studies as well as citizens. We aim to give teaching sessions three times throughout the study programs, creating a progression in which the student develop an increasingly deliberate and independent attitude toward information searching and source criticism.

Step 1
45 minutes. Suitable for first year students.

The teaching session covers basic information about the library, its resources and services, and the search process, focusing on search terms, source criticism and academic articles.

After the teaching session the student should

·         know of the library resources

·         be able to work with search terms

·         know the difference between science and popular science articles

·         be aware of the importance of referencing

It is possible to add a workshop in which the students can put their knowledge into practice.

Step 2
45 minutes. Suitable in connection with writing a technical report.

The teaching session covers reference management, academic honesty and the search process, focusing on different search systems, advanced search techniques and source criticism.

After the teaching session the student should

·         know the difference in coverage and use of different search systems

·         be able to use advanced search techniques

·         be able to critically compare and evaluate information sources

·         be able to explain the meaning of academic honesty and to manage references correctly

It is possible to add a workshop in which the students can put their knowledge into practice.

Step 1 and 2 can be given in one session of 45 + 45 minutes

Step 3
