Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering

3,5 years, 210 hp (ECTS credits)

Today’s society is characterised by the rapid increase in the use of advanced technology, as well as increasing complexity and vulnerability.

Current practice is often to analyse what happened, and to put into place measures, after an accident so as to ensure that it cannot happen again, instead of being one step behind in other words assessing and analysing the risks and, if possible, predicting the development of society and risks, in order to prevent accidents or minimize their consequences. It’s a question of gaining knowledge by experiment and evaluation. It is also important to question established methods and solutions, as we are now dealing with new, different demands.

The programme in Fire Protection Engineering in Lund is the answer to this development.

The programme

Fire protection engineering at university level is a relatively new discipline. There are only about 450 such engineers in Sweden, all of which have, in principle, gained their degrees from LTH/Lund University. The programme in Lund has been available since 1986. It is 3½ years long (210 credits), and includes courses in basic engineering and scientific subjects, combustion chemistry, combustion dynamics, structural engineering, risk evaluation, risk management and urban planning. The emphasis is naturally on fire protection. Many of our students take a break from their studies to gain practical experience at well-known fire safety consulting companies abroad (e.g. the USA and Australia).
The programme is concluded with a degree project equivalent to 22½ credits (15 weeks).

The Fire Protection Engineering programme is the only Swedish university degree providing qualifications for the fire and rescue service. The programme is unique, in both its breadth and depth, both of which provide graduates with the qualifications required to pursue successful careers.

Career and research

Fire protection engineers work in various public utilities, authorities and colleges, and are engaged in fire and safety inspections, training or R&D. Others find jobs in private companies, for example, in the chemical industry and construction sector, or in consulting or insurance companies. Their work often involves prevention and protection measures, fire safety calculations and risk assessment.

Just over half of the graduates in fire protection engineering work for local fire and rescue services, in areas such as fire protection measures, method development, training and administration. A degree in Fire Protection Engineering is required for higher level of incident commanders.

The programme is strongly connected to research in the field. Within the Department of Fire Safety Engineering and Systems Safety at LTH research is being carried out in areas such as the modelling of fire spread, human behaviour in the case of fire, extinguishing media and their efficacy, the optimisation of industrial fire protection measures, risk-based fire safety planning, and fire and rescue services.
