Master of Architecture

5 years, 300 hp (ECTS Credits)

The guiding principles of the programme in Architecture are those of intuition, inspiration, experimentation, orientation to both theory and practice, and of providing the highest level of professionalism possible in the education and training of architects. The programme is organised around a core of extremely competent teachers of architecture, supported by visiting lecturers of high international quality and renown who enrich the programme from year to year.

  • Studies take place in an open and international atmosphere in which there are students and teachers from all parts of the world.
  • The programme aims at providing an internationally recognised level of education and training comparable to that available at the best architectural schools anywhere in the world.
  • Exchange studies during one or two terms at one of a number of different European, North American, Asian or Australian schools of architecture is offered as an integral part of the fourth year of studies.
  • Six months’ practical experience at an architects’ office, either in Sweden or another country of choice, is offered as an integral part of the fifth year of studies.
  • A project represents the core of the training provided; the themes involved including those of urban planning, architecture, interior design, the architecture of other countries, restoration and furniture design.
  • High priority is given to projects involving artistic experimentation.
  • Considerable effort is made to combine architectural theory and architectural practice in the projects in which students participate.
  • We expect a high level of performance from students, at the same time as we endeavour to provide the best study and learning conditions possible.

The programme

The basic programme in Architecture takes three years to complete. Studies during the first and second years involve, above all, gaining experience in a studio-type environment; the third year being concentrated on a project of the student’s choice. The third year also constitutes the beginning of an international workshop concerned with processes of experimental construction and design. A wide variety of courses is also offered. After the completion of basic studies, a student can either continue to more advanced studies in Lund, or switch to an architectural programme of the appropriate level at another university or school of architecture, either in Sweden or abroad.

The latter part of the programme in architecture, beginning in the fourth year, involves training for an internationally recognised master’s degree. The programme enables and promotes exchange with foreign schools. A team of international teachers and tutors is involved at this stage, and all teaching and other required elements of the course are held in English. During this fourth year the student can choose between a variety of areas, including architectural design, building construction, and experiments in interior and furniture design. Students can also take courses appropriate to their chosen field in the profession.

During the fifth year students are given the opportunity of gaining professional experience by working at a leading architects’ office either in Sweden or abroad. This practical work experience can form the basis for a dissertation completing the master’s programme.

We work with the firm conviction that architecture is a delicate balance between feeling and rational thinking. Architecture is more than the application of well-known techniques and traditional theories. We aim towards more multi-dimensional architecture with a will to be expressive; architecture with a sensual force, reflecting the era we live in.
