Doctoral studentship

Doctoral studies are financed by doctoral studentships and a doctoral student is thus regarded as an employee of the Institute, as well as a student. Doctoral students are usually required to carry out some teaching at undergraduate level. Doctoral studentships are limited to a maximum of four years effective time. Positions are advertised in journals and on the LTH web site (the page lists all vacant positions, not only postgraduate studentships). You can also obtain information about positions directly from the department concerned.

Scholarships

Lund University does not award scholarships. There are however different possibilities to obtain scholarships. Minimum level accepted at Lund University is 12 300 SEK.

• EU funded scholarships, such as Erasmus Mundus or Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window
  
• Scholarships awarded within the framework of Swedish programs for international development, such as SIDA/SAREC
  
• Scholarships awarded by non-Swedish, national funding agencies.

In the latter case, a minimum requirement is that the scholarship is guaranteed for the entire study period, the scope of financing of studies shall correspond to the lowest educational allowance level, since 2009 the amount is SEK 15.500 monthly, before tax (Swedish “utbildningsbidrag”).

However, the fact that a person has been awarded a scholarship does not automatically guarantee a place as a doctoral student. This decision is taken on an individual basis by the Faculty of Engineering LTH at Lund University on request by a Department at LTH.

Fees, financing and accommodation

There are no tuition fees at Swedish universities. To join a students' union costs about SEK 550 per year (optional). Books and other course literature must also be bought. English and American books are normally more expensive in Sweden than in their country of origin. The University has a modern library for technology, medicine and the natural sciences, and departments also have their own libraries. There is thus ample opportunity to borrow books.

Living costs are about SEK 8000 per month, including rent, for a single student living in one room. The students' union has a limited number of rooms and flats, but there is normally a waiting list for these, so you should arrange accommodation in advance.
