Photonics

Photonics is the science and technology of generating and controlling photons. The science of photonics includes the emission, transmission, amplification, manipulation, detection and utilization of light.

Photonics is one of the most important key technologies for markets in the 21st century. The photonics industry plays a vital role in areas such as information and communication, lighting and manufacturing, security, space and defense, life science and health care.

We offer a programme in major photonics areas: engineering (generation and manipulation of light), communication (transport of information by optical and microwave techniques), diagnostics (utilization of light in industry, health care etc.) and component technology.

Features of the program

  • In-depth understanding of optics and laser technology
  • Practical experience of optical design
  • Practical experience in an optics and laser laboratory
  • In-depth knowledge of some of the main photonics applications (e.g. communication).

Career prospects:

Employment opportunities exist in many areas. Applications of photonics include light detection, telecommunications, information processing, illumination, metrology, spectroscopy, medicine, laser material processing, robotics and defence. The photonics industry is in rapid expansion worldwide.

This education programme is coupled to world-leading research activities in optics, lasers and their applications, performed at the Lund Laser Centre (LLC). LLC is the largest unit in the Nordic countries within the field of lasers, optics and spectroscopy, and a large scale facility of the European Union, part of Laserlab-Europe.
