Academic system

By tradition, universities or faculties of engineering in Sweden are often named "Teknisk högskola". Accordingly, Lunds tekniska högskola, which issues the degree, is the Faculty of Engineering within Lund University.

The international master's programmes all lead to the Swedish degree of "Teknologie Master" which is translated into "Degree of Master of Science (Two Years) in...". This degree is awarded by Lunds tekniska högskola. The following degrees will be issued:

  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Biotechnology
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Food Technology and Nutrition
  • Master of Fine Arts (120 credits) in Industrial Design
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Nanoscience
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Photonics
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Sustainable Urban Design
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in System-on-Chip
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Water Resources Engineering
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Wireless Communications

It is the responsibility of international students to verify if the degree is recognized as a degree of Master of Science in their country of origin.

Academic studies in Sweden are organized according to a credit system. 1,5 ECTS credits is equivalent to one week of full-time studies, and during the course of a normal academic year students should aim at obtaining 60 ECTS credits.

The academic year is divided into two terms. At LTH each term is divided into two study periods. Each study period consists of seven weeks. Usually you study at least two courses in parallell during each period. There is always one week of examinations after each study period prior to the start of the next study period. It is not unusual for a course to run over two study periods and be followed by an examination at the end of the course. Written examinations at the end of a course are the most common form of evaluation, however, written reports, which may be presented orally to the lecturer or to a group, are also a common means of evaluating the performance of students. The grades usually awarded at LTH are:

  • 5 - Excellent
  • 4 - Very good
  • 3 - Pass

Some courses are graded simply as Pass or Fail.

NB! The only grades available for a Degree Project are Pass or Fail. There will be no ranking of the students enrolled in the master's programmes.
