Academic System

Please note that no ECTS grades are awarded at the Faculty of Engineering!

Academic studies in Sweden are organized according to a credit system. During the course of a normal academic year, students should aim at obtaining 60 credits. The academic year is divided into two semesters.

The Faculty of Engineering
The grades awarded at LTH are: 5 (excellent), 4 (very good), 3 (pass) and U (fail).

For some courses, grades are only given as Pass/Fail. This applies to all courses within Architecture as well as for the degree project.

No ECTS grades are awarded.

At LTH each semester is divided into two study periods, each with a duration of seven weeks followed by a week of examinations. It is not unusual for a course to run over two study periods and be followed by an examination at the end of the course. Most common is a written exam, but written reports that have to be presented and approved by the professors is also a way of evaluating the performance of the students.

Other faculties
Sometimes students at LTH follow courses at other faculties of Lund University. Each faculty has a different way of grading their students, but the most common is where two grades are awarded:
G (pass, approx. corresponding to the LTH grade 3)
VG (pass with distinction, approx. corresponding to the LTH grades 4 and 5)
