Assessment of Scientific, Teaching and Leadership Qualifications

Introduction

The appointment of academic staff at the University is regulated by various provisions in legislation, collective agreements and local regulations. In 2011 the Higher Education Ordinance opened up for the universities to decide themselves on their organization, on university teacher categories and the design of recruitment processes, as well as matters regarding the promotion of academic staff. The Higher Education Act provides that the universities shall employ professors and senior lecturers for teaching and research. The Higher Education Ordinance defines the basic qualification criteria for these two categories, whereas the University is to decide on additional regulations regarding university teachers in the University’s appointment rules.

The rules and regulations for academic appointments at Lund University define the following teacher categories: professors including visiting and adjunct professors, senior lecturers, postdoctoral fellows and lecturers. The employment forms of associate senior lecturer and research fellow remain until the employment contracts run out. A collective agreement has made it possible to engage adjunct senior lecturers and adjunct lecturers from 2012. Fixed-term appointments as a senior lecturer or lecturer may be offered in accordance with the Employment Protection Act.

As a complement to the University’s appointment rules, each faculty may establish its own instructions in which the faculty’s special needs and requirements regarding qualifications can be defined. In this document, LTH has therefore specified criteria and clarifications that can serve as guidelines for academic appointments boards, (external) experts, heads of department and others in connection with appointments and promotion. These criteria can also provide help for applicants in formulating their applications.
