Hybrid vehicles combine the long range of petrol- and diesel-driven vehicles with many of the advantages of electricity. The combustion engine in hybrid vehicles can be made smaller and can be adapted so as to provide higher efficiency and lower emissions. Hybrid technology therefore has great potential to provide vehicles that are more environmentally friendly without affecting the handling characteristics.
The Department of Industrial Electrical Engineering & Automation at LTH is very active in this field of research, in close collaboration with the Swedish automobile industry. This department, together with other departments at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, has been commissioned by the Swedish automobile industry to give a course in hybrid vehicle technology.
