Combustion engines are an important part of modern society. About two-thirds of the work required for transport in Sweden is performed by combustion engines. Combustion engines are also important for Swedish industry; the motor industry in Sweden produces engines with a total capacity of about 200 GW each year. However, combustion engines are not without problems. How are we to design combustion engines in the future so that they neither cause pollution nor consume our finite resources of petroleum? This is being studied at the Division of Combustion Engines at the Department of Energy Sciences.
