Transportation accounts for approximately one quarter of the Swedish energy use. The transport sector is that in which energy use is increasing most rapidly in the majority of countries, also in Sweden. There are many reasons for this. Improved economy, social structure, industry, land exploitation and the development of road and rail networks all play important roles. Both trends and active measures in these areas will affect the future use of energy by the transport sector.
In order to make more reliable predictions and develop more effective measures, it is important that we understand more about the complex relations between these factors.
The driving forces behind the transport of people and goods differ somewhat, and research is thus often divided into these two areas. Extensive research is being carried out in both these areas at LTH and Lund University.
