Social Aspects

Energy systems are highly related to society in general. Energy plays an important role in economic development through its contribution to industrial production and transport. Energy is also necessary for people to be able to heat their houses, refrigerate their food, and travel to and from work and leisure activities. The development of energy systems is governed not only by technology, but equally by the many decisions made in society, by individuals, companies, organisations and authorities, conscious or otherwise.
In order to understand the energy system as a socio-technical system, knowledge is required from a large number of scientific areas. At LTH and Lund University research is in progress that extends from energy systems analysis and industrial environmental economics, to economic history, sociology and cultural geography. Research includes the analysis of the technical and economic conditions for different systems, current development trends, behaviour and lifestyle, organisation, policy instruments and innovation systems.
