District heating allows the use of many different sources of energy, especially those that require large production plants. District cooling has also recently been introduced. One of the aims of research in district heating is to make systems more efficient by reducing heat losses and investment costs, etc. Economic and non-technical issues are also being studied.
Sweden is among the leading countries in this area. At LTH research has been carried out for many years at the Division of Efficient Energy Systems, at the Department of Energy Sciences.
