The development of new fuels for use in the transport sector as well as stationary machinery is an important component in the adaptation of today’s energy system. During recent decades, there has been considerable growth in the use of biofuels in Sweden to replace fossil fuels, mainly in district heating systems.
Fossil fuels still dominate the transport sector, where oil today accounts for 98% of the total energy use in this sector. Emissions of greenhouse gases are also growing most rapidly in this sector. Tough measures are therefore necessary, including the introduction of alternatives to oil.
LTH is making a contribution to this work through research in the production of transport fuels such as ethanol, biogas and hydrogen. A great deal of research is also being carried out at LTH and Lund University into energy systems based on biofuels.
