Power Electronics

Power electronics is used to convert electrical energy in a way similar to that of a transformer, but with considerably greater flexibility. Energy use can be reduced in many industrial applications by controlling the rotational speed of electric motors using power electronics. This is the key technology in modern wind turbines and electrically powered and hybrid cars.
Research and teaching in power electronics are being carried out by the Department of Industrial Electrical Engineering & Automation, and involves both power semiconductors and the practical design of power electronic equipment for control and regulation.
