Heat exchangers constitute key components and are necessary in all energy systems. In many cases, the cost of the heat exchangers accounts for a significant proportion of the total investment cost of a plant or system. Traditional heat exchangers are often very large, requiring a great deal of space. Research and development are necessary to meet the challenges of long-term sustainable energy systems regarding thermal performance, compactness, cost, environmentally friendly manufacturing methods and recyclability.
Extensive research is being carried out in these areas at the Division of Heat Transfer, at the Department of Energy Sciences, LTH.
